Survival Kit!

Do you have what you need in your survival kit to live safely for a night or two in the wild, while you await rescue? Here is a list of what you need to put in a fanny pack or other easy to transport bag.

The three essentials...

Signalling: a plastic well-made whistle that will be heard for a long distance. A small and safe mirror for attracting the attention of aircraft.

Shelter: An emergency blanket that can be used for warmth and protection from wind and rain. A reflective one can also be used for signalling. It can reflect heat from your fire as well. If you can fit a poncho into your day pack, a lean-to or A-Frame shelter can be made quite easily. go-to

Fire: Fire paste is my go-to ingredient for starting a fire. Weather proof matches are a must. A small votive candle is a good tinder back up as well as a magnesium rod with sparking device. Backk ups are always a good thing.

Miscellaneous: Other things can be quite useful, if you have the room. You should make room for water in your pack. A compass (and knowing how to use it) is quite helpful. A few first aid items are great. A water purification straw can make a difference. If not, purification tablets with a zip lock bag might be prudent. There are more things one can have in his/her back pack. But remember, the three essentials are critical for surviving a night or two.
